We write French and English books for kids.
What's New
Proud to announce the launch of Clementine in Quarantine! The chapter book with illustrations follows 11-year-old Clementine as she experiences the early weeks of the coronavirus in Montreal and is geared toward beginning readers around 8-9 years old. We also created a French edition, Clémence au temps du coronavirus, and buying both books is great for kids learning either language. Check out our very short but sweet virtual launch on Facebook. Big shout outs to Noemi and Christian at Facile à Lire, our publishers. Visit Facile à Lire to purchase a copy!
About
LuGaLit is Lucie Gagnon and Gail Marlene Schwartz. We write books for kids in French and in English. Offering original manuscripts in both languages gives a literary and marketing edge to publishers, enabling an expanded readership without the need for translations.
We’re driven by a desire to tell kid-centric stories with style, depth, humor, and authenticity. We’re drawn to underrepresented and marginalized characters to give children reading experiences that reflect the diversity of their world. We aim high and go the extra kilometer, challenging ourselves constantly to deliver the top-quality literary experiences we want for our young readers.
We also believe that quality books are made through a mindful and respectful process. We put lots of effort into communication with all collaborators at every step of the process.
Gail is a tenor, a mixed-media artist, and a dual citizen. She loves peanut butter cup ice cream, the singer-songwriter Charlie Hope, and her Swiss Chard plants. Check out Gail’s adult author website.
Lucie is a homeschooling mom who loves board games, nowhere drives, and bucatini all’Amatriciana. She was born and raised in Montreal.

Clementine in Quarantine
Book Type: middle grade hi-low
Publisher: Facile à lire
Clementine’s life has always been same old, same old…until the coronavirus. Now, she can’t see Nana, give her hugs, or buy candy at the Candy Shop. Mom stays home. The streets are empty, and even schools are closed, so she can’t play with her friends. Worst of all, she fights with her mother ALL. THE. TIME. But maybe with some encouragement from Nana, Clementine can dig into her creativity to find the unexpected and make a difference.
Forthcoming
The Loudest Bark: A Tale of Puppies and Gender
Book Type: picture book
Publisher: Rebel Mountain Press
Samuel’s house is quiet, so very quiet, but his babysitter’s place next door is just the opposite. Chloe is a costume designer with a big pregnant dog and Samuel discovers a whole new world with her. Through visits and walks and playing dress up, Samuel reveals his deepest desires to Chloe: having a puppy of his own and being called by his real name, Simone. This colorful picture book is a celebration of friendship, affirmation, gender nonconformity, and VERY LOUD NOISE.
